A menu-bar app for macOS
Your reMarkable notes and highlights, mirrored as Markdown on your Mac.
markInk keeps a one-way mirror of your tablet in a folder you choose: an Obsidian vault, a Git repo, anywhere on disk. Handwriting is transcribed on your Mac. Typed Type Folio text comes across word for word. Your tablet is only ever read, never written to.

A mirror that only ever reads.
Everything on the tablet, as files your notes app already understands.
Handwriting becomes text
Transcription runs on your Mac. Apple's built-in recognition works out of the box; an optional local model raises accuracy and keeps everything offline. Accuracy varies with legibility, and the result is plain text you can fix in place.
Highlights become quotes
Mark a passage on a PDF or EPUB and it lands as a quote, with the margin note you wrote beside it, in reading order.
Files your notes app reads
Plain Markdown with front matter, in the folder structure of your tablet. Point markInk at an Obsidian vault and your notes are simply there, ready to link and search.
Typed text stays exact
Pages written with the Type Folio keyboard are extracted character for character, headings and all. There is nothing to transcribe and nothing to double-check.
Your tablet is never touched
markInk is a read-only client. It has no code path that can rename, move, or delete anything on your reMarkable. The mirror runs one way, tablet to Mac.
Nothing is sent to us
Your notes are read from the reMarkable cloud and written straight to your disk. There is no account to make with us and no analytics of any kind.
Highlight a PDF. Get the quote back.
Mark a passage on a PDF or EPUB and it lands as a Markdown quote, with the margin note you wrote beside it, in reading order. No transcription is needed; the text is already there on the page. It can work on scans too: freehand-highlight a printed page and the line under your marker arrives as text.
- Quotes
- Word for word
- Margin notes
- Kept beside them
- OCR involved
- None on a text layer
Word-for-word quotes need a PDF with a real text layer: your reMarkable extracts the highlighted words itself, and markInk copies them across exactly. On a scan or a photo there's no text to copy, so markInk reads the highlighted strip with on-device text recognition, which needs the page to be unrotated and uncropped. When it can't read a highlight, it says so right on the page instead of leaving the page out.

How it compares
How do I get reMarkable handwriting into Obsidian as text?
Install markInk, pair it with your reMarkable account once, and point it at a folder in your Obsidian vault. Every notebook then appears there as a Markdown file, with handwriting transcribed on your Mac and PDF highlights as quotes.
| Tool | What you get | Where it runs |
|---|---|---|
| reMarkable's own apps | Converted text lands as a new typed page in the notebook; out by email as PDF, PNG or text, or to Drive and Dropbox. Not Markdown files on your disk. | Started on the tablet; needs Wi-Fi and your reMarkable account. Converting from the desktop app needs a Connect subscription. |
| reMarkable Bridge (Obsidian plugin) | Sends notes to the tablet as typed text and pulls typed edits back. Pen strokes on PDFs return as ink overlays, not text. | Inside Obsidian, through the reMarkable desktop app's local store. Free. |
| Tagged Sync for reMarkable (Obsidian) | The notebooks, PDFs and EPUBs you tag, as searchable Markdown routed by tag. Handwriting transcribed locally. | Inside Obsidian on your own machine. Free core, one-time Pro. |
| Scrybble | Annotations and highlights as Markdown, organized by page. Handwriting to text is listed as coming soon. | A web service with an Obsidian plugin. Monthly subscription, 30-day trial. |
| Your whole tablet, or the folders you choose, as Markdown files in any folder. Handwriting transcribed on your Mac; PDF and EPUB highlights as quotes. | A menu-bar app on your Mac, no server. One-time purchase after a 7-day trial. |

Your notes never reach us.
markInk talks to the reMarkable cloud to read your documents, to Hugging Face only if you choose to download the optional transcription model, and to the App Store for pricing and the one-time purchase. That is the whole list. Your device token is kept in the macOS Keychain, transcription runs on your Mac, and nothing is sent to BeyondSimulations. There is no server of ours to send it to.
